La Via del Grano - Wheat Road is the name of the old “Regio Cammino di Matera”, a road which connected “Principato Citeriore and Principato Ulteriore”, the current districts of Salerno and Avellino, to Basilicata in the XIX century. In 1789, the Marquis of Valva, district superintendent of roads and bridges, proposed King Ferdinando IV di Borbone to build the road both to connect towns from Campania to Lucania and to better transport wheat and food from Puglia’s fertile valleys to Naples.

In Eboli's Epitaffio area there is an inscription on stone which celebrates the roads’s construction, which had to connect Eboli to Atella, a town in the Vitalba Valley, Lucania.

“Regnando Ferdinando IV, provvidentissimo Re delle Sicilie, da questo luogo fino ad Atella dei Lucani, per circa 47 miglia, per interessamento dell’illustrissimo signor Giuseppe Valva, Marchese di Valva, Regio Cubiculario, recidendo monti, livellando valli, superando con idonei ponti fiumi e torrenti, fu costruita questa strada rotabile nell’anno 1797.”
