La Via del Grano is a cultural association born in 1996, thanks to the munificence of Battipaglia’s Club Inner Winner, which offered to the City of Eboli the commemorative stone destroyed by 1943 bombing. The stone, located in Epitaffio area, bears an inscription in Latin which celebrate the first milestone on the “Regio Cammino di Matera”, to point out the 44th mile from Naples.
“La Via del Grano” - Wheat Road is the name of the old “Regio Cammino di Matera”, a road which connected, “Principato Citeriore e Principato Ulteriore”, the current districts of Salerno and Avellino, with Basilicata region in the XIX century. In 1789, the Marquis of Valva, district superintendent of roads and bridges, proposed King Ferdinando IV di Borbone to build the road for two reasons: it connected towns from Campania to Lucania regions and it was useful to transport wheat and food from Puglia’s fertile valleys to Naples.
